Cartooning & Visual Art Papakura
Based in Papakura, Māpura’s Cartooning & Visual Art programme offers the local community and wider area the skills to develop and create comics and illustrations.
This is an open studio group; you will be encouraged to be self-directed in your work, drawing on your own experiences to create and develop characters and themes.
Your skills are developed through the combination of image and text, humour and narrative. You’ll focus on your own imagery and ideas and, with the guidance or help of a tutor, produce a self-published, or digital, zine or comic book.
Each session will combine development exercises, collaborative group work and tutoring on individual projects in a safe and fun environment.
The Cartooning programme covers various genres: experimental and abstract comics, journalism and autobiographical comics, as well as more traditional forms such as gag strips, superheroes and manga.
You will learn how to use a wide range of techniques from drawing to printing making and painting, and you’ll find out about the various ways of reproducing your comic art.
All abilities and ages are welcome.
You can enrol for a term or come to individual lessons, it’s up to you.
Cartooning, in all its various forms, is a rewarding and expressive art form.
