Puzzled
Sunday 8 Nov – Friday 13 Nov 2020
@ Lake House Arts Centre
37 Fred Thomas Drive, Takapuna,
Auckland 0622
Puzzled is a selection of mostly recent drawings, paintings and objects by Lizzie Collenette, Colin Harris, Sian Thomas and Madeleine Wilson, a group of artists from Māpura Studios.
This small group show is a celebration and exploration of the creative process and unique perspective of each artist. The works allow the viewer to gain a broader perspective of the complexity in the thought processes and vision of each artist.
The title of the show was created by the group and inspired by Sian Thomas’s installation of puzzle drawings in the show.
The show was initially postponed due to the Corona virus. Although the concept was not related to the virus it is now strangely poignant considering recent events. It has been a very fragmented and confusing year for many, somewhat ‘puzzling’ one might say.
The diverse group of artists in this exhibition, are representative of the wider culture at Mapura Studios. Located in central Auckland with satellite groups in other areas, Māpura Studios offers an extensive inclusive programme for people of diverse needs and ages, including visual art, music, cartooning, dance, performance and art therapy.
Colin Harris
“For me Puzzled is about my personal journey this year full of different pieces collectively created to make my work. Some pieces are colourful contrary to the situation. The hard times are reflected in the difficult pieces and the easy pieces reflect the good times.
Colin’s raw and urban voice reflects the angst and uncertainty of recent times in an assertive and clear manner. The writing might be on the wall but it is also found throughout these paintings.
Colin’s work is becoming increasingly popular with the local market. He has collaborated with Jeff Thompson and has work in the Wallace Collection.
Lizzie Collenette
The Flowers of My Life
Flowers often feature in Lizzie’s work. Lizzie explores the colours, varieties and beauty of flowers and their importance in her life
“I love the flowers because I remember the Wilson Homes beautiful gardens and my Mum made Niue mats”
Lizzie has been an artist at Mapura since it opened 20 years ago. She has a large body of work from her time in the studio and at home. A few years ago Mapura published a beautifully illustrated book about her life.
Lizzie uses a head pointer to make her work.

Memories From My Childhood
“When I was little my Mum would draw patterns on a piece of paper and I would colour them in. Doing this helps me to relax. It’s one of my favourite things to do. I put pastel on some paper and cover the pastel with black pastel and scratch it off. I call my paintings ‘Memories from my Childhood’” Sian Thomas
Apart from the puzzles, Sian also creates paintings and drawings of characters from popular cartoons, local radio stations and tv shows. She also writes and draws about her experiences with friends and family. Sian’s sense of fun and love for those in her life resonates through her work.
Madeleine Wilson
Madeleine Wilson’s art practice incorporates painting and drawing with varying subject matter including birds, landscapes and singular figures. She enjoys an extensive knowledge of popular culture, demonstrated in this tender series of drawings.
“Some of these drawings are recent and some are from some years ago. Some are from memory and some are from books. I did some of the birds during lockdown.
Abba is my first favourite band. I made Dancing Queen ll after the first one was sold. Bonnie Tyler is my second favourite pop singer. George Harrison is my favourite Beatle. Davy Jones from the Monkees is my favourite singer. He died 8 years ago.. Dolly Parton was from a very big family of 12. The cat is from a calendar. Eleanor Tomlinson plays Demelza on the TV series Poldark. “
I have made some artworks about people from TV as well like Mary Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie” Madeleine Wilson
Madeleine is currently exploring landscape painting often inspired by the New Zealand landscape. She also creates works in the styles of famous painters including Rita Angus and Claude Monet.
Mapura Studios has published a book of Madeleines paintings. Madeleine also has work in the James Wallace Collection.
