Featuring artworks by Māpura Studios artist Kerry Deane
These two works, commenced and completed in tandem are each underpinned by the same theme: the relationship between animals and man made environments, in particular, the subordination of natural species to urban spaces…
MADE is a biannual event showcasing uniquely created works from people in our communities who express their creative flair through art and design.
This year the theme is “Suburban Stories”. Artists and Designers from various Auckland suburbs, exhibit works that convey personal and/or imaginative storytelling.
The event supports local artists and businesses.
Image: For the Birds by Kerry Deane
“For the Birds” demonstrates this through the near invisibility of the birds.
One needs to pay close attention to the painting to make them out.
Image: Croca Non Grata by Kerry Deane
“Croca non-grata is similar in this respect, but we see one species, the duck, assert its presence as the dominant form in the work. The crocodiles, in their inconcruity with the birds are allegorical, emphasising the alienation of animals from our urban environments. On its own the crocodile is”non grata”,a title it assumes on behalf of all other animals in these environments; stressing the alienation mentioned above. Except for the fact that they are all animals, there is nothing in nature which links a crocodile to a duck or a bird; the crocodile appears in the painting to underscore the fact that an animal present in a man made setting is a proverbial “fish out of water”
Māpura Studios tutor Margaret Feeney’s sculptures and artist Kerry Deane’s paintings feature in MADE 2021.
