Matthew has been attending Māpura Studios for many years. He loves painting different pictures and shapes. Matthew loves the studio and is inspired by many things.
Matthew is neuro diverse and struggles with expressive language.
Matthew has, from a very young age always enjoyed art and art making.
Watching the evolution of his artworks over the years, a use of strong colours and instinctive placement within the composition can be noted.
He has long visited the circle shape within his works which can evolve to a disc shape and to a flat line in some pieces. It is almost like he is seeing the circle and disc shape from a range of angles, a celebration of all those facets of the circle shape that have evolved over time – from full circle to flat line.
Two of Matthew’s paintings were included in the ArtPara Shine Together exhibition at the OECD Headquarters in Paris on the occasion of the 2024 Paralympics. The exhibition comprised of disability art from 27 countries and this was the first time New Zealand was included.
