Allyson Hamblett profiles fellow artist
Kerry Deane
Kerry works with a variety of media, including charcoal, ink, and acrylic. His artwork is mainly abstract, taking on geometric form. Often, they are New Zealand landscapes, although a few works have been of New York. “I am primarily attracted to landscapes so these have been the focus of most of my work, but thanks to the encouragement of the brilliant tutors at Māpura, I have recently diversified into subjects as wide ranging as birds, crocodiles, flowers and still life”, says Kerry.
Kerry is a prolific artist drawing every day at home, as well as working in the studio. He particularly enjoys the friendly atmosphere. “Making art when others around you are doing the same is a very positive experience. The fact that you are drawn out of your comfort zone into the exploration of new and exciting frontiers”, says Kerry.

Kerry Deane attends Leading a Creative Life on Thursday morning at Māpura Studios since 2018.
Leading a Creative Life provides a supportive, instructive, and stimulating environment for people living with stroke-affect (or similar disability), to develop a strong visual arts practice. Twice a term there will be a workshop or a tutorial that focuses on the learning requirements of the group and individual learning needs, once a term a guest ‘professional’ artist will present on their arts practice. The remaining time is ‘open studio’ where participants work independently and are self-directed in their choice of content and subject matter. Tutors provide ongoing input regarding methodologies, techniques, media, and guidance re subject matter, so artists are supported in the ongoing progression of their art making capabilities and knowledge base.
