Carer of the Month April –
Nicolai Pere
Nicolai is the mother of Māpura artist Michael Pere, and she is our Carer of the Month for April.
Carers play a very important role in making society stronger and often, as in Nicolai’s case, they are whānau or friends. They provide friendship and support to those in need.
Nicolai not only accompanies Michael to classes at Māpura, she does many other activities with him as well.
A lot of their time is spent practicing Rongoā, the traditional Māori medicinal practice.
Michael and Nicolai collect flora and fauna from te ngahere (the forest), then Michael massages the leaves for use in Mirimiri.
Another traditional Māori healing practice, Mirimiri rebalances, restores function and releases deeply-held tension in the body by applying targeted pressure and using various techniques.

Michael creates worlds within worlds.
In this work, the characters protect the world from darkness.
On Monday mornings, Nicolai accompanies Michael to the Open Studio One class in our Morningside studio, on Tuesdays and Fridays, they attend our singing classes, and on Wednesdays, the Cartooning class.
As well as being a fantastic visual artist creating worlds within worlds, Michael’s a terrific singer and he plays percussion.
Nicolai Pere -a true inspiration – Māpura’s very deserving Carer of the Month!
