Artspace Aotearoa invited Māpura Studios back into their gallery to host another workshop last Saturday.
Art tutors Cath O’Brien and Sam Knegt hosted a self-portrait workshop inspired by the work of Lubaina Himid, currently showing in the Prompts exhibition at Artspace Aotearoa.
Lubaina Himid, Turner prize winner and the Great Britain’s next representative at the Venice Biennale, is a significant contemporary artist. In her work, 2007 – 2017, she paints over pages she has collected from the Guardian newspaper to explore how black people are represented.

In the weekend workshop, Sam and Cath invited participants to explore the idea of what a self-portrait could be by posing a set of questions that featured as part of the Prompts show.
Thanks again to Ruth, Robbie, Paige, volunteers and the wonderful participants. It was a wonderful day with people creating interesting works along with the sharing of discoveries during the process of creating.
Art by Morgan, Dipika, Melissa, Jo and Rachael.
