Carer of the Month (December 2024)
Dominique Bench
Carers are the unsung heroes who provide friendship and support to those in need. They help people be as independent, healthy and as well as possible.
Carers play a very important role in making society stronger – so we’re going to sing their praises with the Carer of the Month.
This month, Māpura would like to acknowledge Dominique Bench (Dom) as being an outstanding support person for artist Lily Curham.
Dom has been supporting Lily for around 18 months and plays a large part in her family. Lily is involved in many and various activities each week – cooking, drama, karaoke, music therapy as well as her art group at Māpura.
Dom takes her to all of these things.
Dom first came into contact with Lily when she was at Hōhepa some years ago.
As well as supporting Lily, Dom has a full life with walking, the environment, music and family time being high on her list of priorities. Earlier in her career, she was involved in a family business, visiting rest homes around the country and engaging the residents through karaoke.
She loves her job as a support person, which is really obvious when you meet her and realise what a caring person she is. Dom is the very deserving Carer of the Month for December.
