David Dawon Choi Visits Māpura Studios
David Dawon Choi visited the studio this morning and joined the Becoming an Artist class.
Born in Korea and living in Ōtautahi Christchurch, David is a full time artist. He is congenitally deaf and almost blind.
David started drawing at the age of three to communicate his thoughts and emotions. After moving to New Zealand at the age of nine, David’s favourite sources of inspiration were the natural world and Māori culture, however, his work also covers small but precious things such as the flavour of coffee in the morning and the warmth of sunshine in the afternoon, as well as social issues.

David exhibited in the ArtPara exhibition in Paris, in conjunction with the 2024 Paralympics, alongside Māpura’s Matthew Allerby and Ululau Ama.
It was fantastic seeing him in the studio. David generally works alone and he really enjoyed being part of the class.
